Having trouble beating a street brawler in a MMA styled sparring match?

I always hear that "street brawlers" can always get shut down by someone who's trained. I, however, can't beat him. His fighting style is little more than basic street strikes coupled with years of experience in street fights (since he grew up in a rough neighborhood); and also techniques he tries to get from books, but can't execute properly. That coupled with his extreme strengh, makes up his style.

I've tried multiple times to beat him in an MMA styled sparring match (rules similar to that of UFC), but it always ends with me on my back on the ground. I've trained in kickboxing, hapkido, tae kwon do, and kombatan. So is it that I'm just not good enough, or is it that he is 6 inches taller than me, and outweighs me by about 65 pounds?

You are engaging in a sport match with this guy, following MMA styled rules. There are weight classes in MMA matches because when everyone is following a set of rules height and weight are a huge advantage. If he takes you down you are toast because he can use his size to lean on you and you also don't appear to have spent much time training for sporting fights that go to the ground.

The only way that you are going to beat someone like this in this particular sporting situation is by training to prevent his takedown attempts and training for the likely scenario of him taking you to the ground again due to his size advantage.

A 5 foot tall lady in your kickboxing class with years of experience may very well lose to a 6 foot tall strong young man who has been in class for a month due to the size and strength differential.
