Is TKD A Good Martial Arts To Take?

TaeKwon-Do is an excellent marital art to take, as are all traditional martial arts, but the more important question is what is the instructor you will learn from like, and what is the school like that you will train in.

Forget about those who indicate any traditional discipline is "useless" or "flashy" or "only good for fitness purposes." All traditional disciplines were designed for a nubmer of purposes including self-defense, self-development, spiritual development, and increased flexibility and stability. With a good, competent, and experienced instructor you will progress and advance. The martial arts have so much to offer everyone, the discipline does not matter so much, but the instructor matters considerably.

I have no idea what you are seeking from your training, but take your time to find an instructor whom you believe understands what you are seeking and is capable of offering that to you. When you find that person, you have found your mentor and instructor, irrespective of the discipline they teach.

As to the effectiveness of TaeKwon-Do, it is extremely effective and useful. I can only presume those who believe it to be "only for fitness" have experienced an extremely flawed, unrepresentative, and incompetent instructor. No experienced martial artist who has played with other disciplines and shared knowledge and experiences with them would ever deride another discipline in such a childish and generalized way. All discplines have inherent strenghts and weaknesses, and all experienced and well trained martial artists learn how to enhance the strenghts and mitigate the weaknesses.
