looking for a good road bike, comfortable over long distances, yet light and tough. suggestions?

back into riding after a 20 yr hiatus. im looking for a good quality starter bike (not cutting edge). ive heard good things about the trek 1.2. good price and quality. looking to do primarily daytrip touring over somewhat hilly terrain. (no racing)

The specific brand matters much less than fit and material. The relatively inexpensive Aluminum frames seem to be pretty harsh much of the time. Although my daughter's Fuji Newest 2.0 is extremely comfortable - really a revelation to me. Much more comfortable than the more racing oriented frames.

I'd tend to look at steel myself. Carbon doesn't like the bangs and bashes of long distance work with gear. Although I love a good carbon bike's ride.

Something to consider is mounting things. Fenders and the like.

I've been riding a LeMond Wayzata, essentially a cyclocross frame. Were I looking for a long distance touring rig I'd probably be thinking along those lines. Lots of clearance around the tires, tough, stable, comfortable.
