Can someone please explain and make sense of this mitten pattern please?

Hi there-

I'm making a pair of mittens for my mother in law and I am stuck on the thumb part. I have everything finished but this part. Can someone please explain what the pattern wants me to do? Here it is from the top:

With the RS facing and using a larger hook, skip first sc row after ribbing. Join yarn with a slip stitch between 2nd and 3rd rows of side edge. Ch 1, sc in same row as joining and in each of next 7 rows. Planning to leave last 2 rows free, on opposite side of mitten sc 8 rows- 16 SETS.

round 1: sc in 15 sts, sc2tog

round 2: sc in 14 sts, sc2tog

work 5 additional sc rnds on 14 sts. Sc2tog around: then sc around on rem 7 sts.

is this all done on the RS? it says right side but It looks funny to me. Please someone help me
out. Thank you!!!

Here is the website I got the pattern from to help you out if you are lost as well.

Yes, this is all on the right side. You are working in rounds for this part of the pattern, meaning you work all the way around and then keep going rather than turning around and going back the other way. I'll address your thumb pattern point by point and watch your post for updates in case you want to ask me any questions. I'll try to answer if you update.

The first step is probably the toughest part as you are starting a round of stitching on the ends of the row, so take your time getting your stitching correct.
1) A) "With the RS facing and using a larger hook, skip first sc row after ribbing. Join yarn with a slip stitch between 2nd and 3rd rows of side edge."
Find the place called for (between 2nd and 3rd rows of side edge, ignoring your cuff ribbing) and start your new yarn at that point (Join yarn with slip stitch...).
1) B) "Ch 1, sc in same row as joining and in each of next 7 rows."
Then you do your first stitch of the thumb in that same spot, followed by 7 more stitches working up that edge. This is one half of the first round of your thumb.
1) C) "Planning to leave last 2 rows free, on opposite side of mitten sc 8 rows "
This is where you work the other 8 stitches down the other side of the mitten, working back to where you started this round (row). What you need to do is count up to where you need to start back down so that doing 8 more stitches brings you back to the correct starting place. So this means to ignore your cuff ribbing again and then count 10 more rows up the unstitched edge of your mitten. That spot you counted to should be where you put sc stitch number 9. Continue to work back toward the cuff with stitches 10 through 16.
1) D) "- 16 SETS."
OK - this contains a typo. That should say "16 sts" which is read as '16 stitches'. It simply means that you should have made 16 sc stitches to complete your first round.

2) "round 1: sc in 15 sts, sc2tog"
Your next stitch will be in the top of the first stitch of the first row of the thumb, thus joining it up into a round. You will also be shapiing, reducing the round by one stitch. that is where 'sc2tog' means to shape the thumb by picking up 2 of the stitches for the first round with your hook and drawing the first loop of the next stitch through them both followed by completing one single crochet. This results in one less stitch in this round - hence 15 sts for a slight taper.
3) "round 2: sc in 14 sts, sc2tog. "work 5 additional sc rnds on 14 sts. Sc2tog around: then sc around on rem 7 sts."
And so on...
