How to open a martial arts school? Are there any licenses or registrations needed?
Are there any licenses or registrations needed? Any certificates need?
There are no legal requirements as to who is qualified to open a dojo. Al, that the law requires is that you have a business license and do the things that other businesses are required to do. You must have martial arts liability insurance. The cheapest that I know of starts at $500 a year. The more students you have the more it cost you.
The real issue here is your qualifications. A qualified instructor is someone that has at least: (for Japanese or Okinawan arts) (NOTE: to be considered legitimate I'd use these for other arts as well)
1) A third degree black belt in a recognized style of martial arts, from a recognized organization.
2) Be at least 21 years of age since traditionally almost no one would have a 3rd dan below that age legitimately.
3) Have at least a Sensei title in writing from a legitimate organization. (The same one your rank is from)
NOTE: these are the very least requirements. However, most adults will be skeptical of anyone as young as 21 being the head instructor of their own martial arts school. In Okinawa, most instructors that have their own dojo are at least 5th dan. Many styles do not allow their students to open dojo until they reach 7th dan.
