Is the ufc good for martial arts?
Alot of ppl say no, but today I saw a kid, betwen 9-11, kicking a bag. He had a wicked head kick, higher than his own head. I asked him if he took lessons, and he said no, he watched the ufc on TV.
If you saw this kid in a gi, you would think he was at least at purple belt level. If ufc gets kids interested in the arts and training on their own, like Lee, Norris, Van Damme, and Seagal movies once did, I think that's a good thing. And like before, they might eventually get to a dojo.;whaddaya think?
Some posters around here say that MMA is a bad representation of martial arts. I disagree. I think some fighters represent martial arts badly. And often times it does happen in an MMA venue. As well, you will find many martial artists in traditional school who represent the spirit of martial arts poorly or who just interpret it in a different way.
I have also seen some posters to go as far to say that a black belt in Vale Tudo does not count for anything because its a sport. In my eyes, combat effectiveness is the ultimate goal in martial arts. I think the inexperienced MMA fighter has more to offer the true spirit of martial arts ( how I look at it ) than the black belts who has never fought.
It still takes guts and discipline to compete in MMA. Like any professional sport, it takes a lot of time, ability and intelligence.
I hope than more people look at sport MMA and decide they want to share in the experience of martial arts.
