Switching or Mixing Martial Arts?
This is a question more geared to people who have switched or do cross train in styles, what was the driving force behind the change or the addition of the new style of martial arts. Because recently I have been thinking about maybe learning a new style when i enter college even though I love Tae Kwon Do with all my heart and i do not know where i would be if i did not practice the art, i have been having a feeling that makes me think about a different style and quite possibly cross training if i have the time. So to clarify the question what was it that made you switch or start a different martial art?
I switched because I moved away from home. Nobody was teaching the system of karate I was graded in when I moved.
Even before then, I'd begun to play around with some principles and techniques outside of my karate training. Mostly to fill in the holes (ie: different kicks, trapping, throws, joint locks). I feel far less "brand loyalty" to a certain system; instead, I just love martial arts as a whole and see it primarily as a self-defense tool. Anything that can help me defend myself better is worth picking up. Although in fairness, spending over a decade in karate made learning other systems easier.
