Training Dagger Practice
Would a katana with a hidden tanto in the hilt inhibit proper training?

I specialize in Chinese martial arts and recently I've been very interested in cross training in other styles. I wanted to try practicing some basic Iaido forms and was wondering if a katana with the tanto in the hilt would inhibit proper training or not. Honestly, I'd buy both a regular katana and a hidden tanto one if I could, but for economical reasons I can't. I see a lot of potential in using the hidden tanto just like using the lesser known dagger in Tai Chi sword, but I'm worried about the extra length.

The very fact that no such weapon existed is evidence enough that having a tanto in the tsuka of a katana would not only inhibit proper training but limit the functionality of the weapon. For example, most traditional schools practice a tenouchi (grip) with the left hand near the base of the tsuka (handle), if there was a tanto in the tsuka then such a grip would not work because you'd risk pulling the tanto out after every swing. If you choked up your grip then suddenly you would have a lot of extra tsuka that would interfere with your swing. On top of that, having that extra weight toward the kashira (cap at the bottom of the tsuka) would misbalance the sword. Next thing to consider is how the blade of the tanto and the nakago (tang) would fit together - would they overlap, would one displace the other, would you simply add an extra 15 inches to the total length of your tsuka resulting in a tsuka that is almost as long as the blade of the katana?

lastly, what is the practical use in having a tanto in the tsuka? samurai already carried a shoto (wakizashi or a tanto) with them at all times anyway, so I don't see the practical use in having a hidden tanto in the tsuka. Furthermore, a katana is primarily a two handed weapon, whereas a tai chi sword (I assume you are referring to the Jian) is primarily one-handed...in this case having a hidden dagger might be useful because you could still efficiently use the tai chi sword in your other hand. Nito waza (two sword technique) with a katana and wakizashi used at that same time is a very specialized technique and is only practiced in a very few traditional schools (Niten Ichi ryu and Tenshinsho-Den Katori Shinto Ryu to name a few). For a vast majority of traditional Japanese styles, having the katana in one hand is impractical, and as such taking a hand off of it in order to pull out a hidden dagger would not be beneficial in any way.
