Why are there no longer 9th and 10th dan examinations in Kendo?
Why? and can you use two swords (or strike with the shinai in one hand only) in Kendo: I saw a guy with a normal shinai in one hand and a wakizashi sized shinai in the other in a competition.
In all the years I have been studying Kendo (12) I have never heard of anyone, US or Asia, that tested for 9th or 10th dan...ever. Those are honorary ranks bestowed upon the most respected dojo instructors in Kendo and that will vary according to which association one belongs to.
In terms of using a long shinai and short shinai, yes...at the higher levels of training that is included and they do have a separate competitive division for that but you typically have to be asked to compete in that division. There are certain schools of Kendo that will not permit two shinai training but some have followed the Hoyo Nitten Ichi Ryu legacy left behind by Miyamoto Musashi...but they are very rare.
