What's New with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Ontario
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) are a sport with about a hundred-year modern tradition. A selection of techniques is permitted in each match. With that, martial artists skilled in different arts can get into the ring. This sport is full-contact and its roots can be traced all the way back to ancient Rome.
Recently, health professionals gathered in Niagara Falls to talk about this sport during the Canadian Medical Association's general annual meeting. Most of the professionals expressed their belief that the sport should not be legal. They simply argue that MMA is a dangerous sport with too large a probability of injuries – much larger than it is in boxing.
Dr. Ian Gillespie, the president of BCMA, says that "MMA fighting, like boxing, is distinct from many other sports in that the basic intent of the fighter is to cause harm in order to incapacitate his or her opponent." Then he adds: "the various techniques […] aren't limited to punching, and there may be the presence of fewer safety rules."
Another parallel institution that expressed worries about MMA was the British Medical Association (BMA) . Since early 2009, they are actively campaigning to ban this sport in Britain. They also argue that the sport can be excessively brutal and violent.
In an article from the opposite camp, WatchKalibRun.com brings their understanding of the British Medical Association's arguments. They suggest that there are limited or no statistics available from the British and point to an American study finding that numbers of injuries and knock-out rates in Mixed Martial Arts are comparable to those of other fighting activities.
The Hamilton Spectator talked to two to find out what they think about the matter. They bring up the problem of less efficient protective measures in MMA than in box, the rules are less strict and there are fewer regulations overall. Unlike in box, the strikes are not aimed solely at the opponent's head and torso in MMA, which allows for a wider selection of injuries, although it could decrease the relative prominence of head injuries specifically. Both professionals call for the introduction of standardizedprocedures across Canada instead of keeping regulations granular across provinces.
Why do the Canadian doctors rise up now? It is because only now (in the middle of August 2010), Ontario province government decided to make the sport legal in the province. The two largest players – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Warrior One (W1) – have already prepared business strategies aiming to develop activities in some of the most important cities and even some smaller ones. Ontario Premier Mr. Dalton McGuinty had to turn a blind eye to sign the law after prolonged negotiations and much thought, but stresses the importance of close scrutiny of all the events and adherence to strict rules.
Nonetheless, doctors are not pleased that there are seldom trained professionals at the matches and even if they were required to attend, it would be unbearable for them to passively watch the ongoing injuries without being able to help the fighters. Traditional martial artists opine that MMA is in its essence countering the basic principles of the old martial arts which are discipline, respect, courtesy and self-control.
According to CTV, Dr. Shelby Karpman points out that since the sport is already so popular, outlawing it would not prevent matches from taking place illegally. Also, medical supervision would not be enforceable and in turn the artists could count on substandard care. This equals even greater danger.
Considering all cited opinions, it seems that if the sport cannot be banned, it should be officially regulated and adherence to rules should be controlled. This means that there should be appropriate medical care present with appropriate competencies; licensing, insurance and preventative measures should be enforced all the time.
As I am sure you are wondering: Extreme sports such as MMA are treated as a special case in life insurance. Not every company will even want to sell you coverage. Those who have such policies in their portfolio are going to ask a much higher fee. The final price is going to depend on the amount of the risk that you are facing in the sport. A fighter should be completely aware of any caveats and exclusions in the plan agreement and should make sure the combat is part of a properly licensed event. Illegal fighting is excluded by all insurers.
But life insurance is not going to be sufficient if you perform extreme sports. A fighter will most probably severely harm his or her opponent and will therefore be liable for the damages. So, it is a good idea that each fighter has liability insurance of her or his own. For liability insurance, it also applies that the combat should be part of a properly supervised and licensed event and is subject to any exclusions.
