what is better: Hawley or Essix?
Im getting my braces off soon and Im not sure what type of retainer to get. My gag refleix is pretty bad and I have a lisp and I dont want it to become even more noticiable than it already is... but my friend has the essix retainer and Im able to see it and its cloudy and that makes it unattractive. But with the hawley retainer there is a metal band going across your teeth.
I play sports year round (swim and soccer) and I just want to know the pros and cons of each and which one is better.
The better retainer is the one that will do the best job in your case in terms of keeping you teeth in place. Your case is unique, and most likely your orthodontist will be the one who makes the decision on which type of retainer is best for you. If you are given an option to choose, I would go with a hawley as they are more durable and often last longer than the clear type. Clear retainers get stained and clouded, and in some cases damage more easily. If you grind your teeth at night, you are better off with a hawley, as grinders will grind through the clear type.
Your lisp might worsen a bit with either type, but most people get used to them pretty fast and this might be the case for you too.
You can remove them while playing your sports (look into getting a good mouthguard for soccer to protect your new beautiful smile!)
And yes, you can get a funky color, glow in the dark or nice design on it if you are getting a hawley type retainer. Over time you probably will be reduced to just over-night wear, so the hawley is a good choice.
