Any thoughts on sparring?
Since sparring has become a game of tag , do any of you find it use full in training? I can see the point of one step and two step sparring, but i do not see any point in free sparring. I find sparring to be counter productive , due to when properly training you should be focusing on proper technique , speed and power. So it is only natural we can not sparr with all the proper technique , speed and power we work so hard for due to someone WILL get hurt. After all that is why they made strike pads and kick Shields right? Any thoughts on this?
RE: Harry, really? in what way? a
RE: All , sparring if fun, and yes it can help with control and it will also clean up your technique, but it has nothing to do with real fighting. proper skill and technique wins 9 out of 10 times in a real life.
I think you have neglected the element of control in your training or forgotten that concept. I can throw a rear leg round house, full speed and full power at a moving, thinking, and reacting sparring partner and just tap him or if my intent is instead to do damage it will not be just a tap but two inches further in and will hit with a lot of force. I can do that with a number of techniques like back-fist, reverse punch, ridge-had, side, front, and round house kicks as well as some jump spinning kicks. There is just a matter of inches here and in sport karate sparring you pull these techniques for the most part although I have actually been hit harder and injured more in sport karate than in full contact.
In full contact sparring I might exercise some control still with students and fighters and they with me now that I am getting up there in years which I greatly appreciate. Make no mistake though in a real situation or real fight control is not emphasized or one of the things that is used when throwing such techniques and they are thrown with bad intentions in mind and for the purpose of doing damage and not just tapping or scoring a point.
You should practice for both in your training and that is partly what is meant by having good control. That is the ability to instead land that technique hard for the purpose of doing damage if that is the intention and what the situation calls for and when it does not still being able to throw it with good speed and power but not hurting someone. Having good control means being able to do that with your basic skills and techniques and I suggest you try it with a heavy bag. If you can't then you have missed something in your training somewhere.
Here is another way to look at this. If you can throw all your techniques with maximum speed and power and decide to just tap or actually hit them how good would you be and how good would your skills be. I dare say that you would agree that those skills would be quite good and your ability to use them. A good black belt will possess such skill and ability.
