Would it be good to use the bokken instead?
I want to practice kendo at home also but the ceiling is too low for me to swing my shinai around. So I was wondering could I use my bokken instead, without getting some bad habits or other things like that?. Thanks!
I don't think a bokken will be shorter. At least, not short enough to make a difference. It is heavier though, and will make you stronger.
In the ARMA (Association for Renaissance Martial Arts), they weight the ends of pvc based swords for realism. I am thinking that if you used a shorter Wakizashi bokken (or cut down a regular sized bokken) and weighted the end, that might give you the freedom you want.
You would probably want to drill a hole in the blade end and insert a heavy bolt in there. I like shinai, but I like the bokken better because the handle is oblong, not round. It "tells" you where the blade is. A round pipe doesn't do that well.
